Summary

The Story of a Childhood and The Story of a Return

The intelligent and outspoken child of radical Marxists, and the great-grandaughter of Iran's last emperor, Satrapi bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined with the history of her country。 Persepolis paints an unforgettable portrait of daily life in Iran and of the bewildering contradictions between home life and public life。 This is a beautiful and intimate story full of tragedy and humour - raw, honest and incredibly illuminating。

An incredible graphical memoir with a captivating comics style。 Satrapi starts the story somewhat abstract and grandiose, which makes perfect sense for an adult remembering what it was like to be a child - especially growing up during such utter societal upheaval。 She slowly becomes more practical in her writing style as she reflects on herself growing up, until she eventually has to accept her relationship with the her family, her culture, her home country, and the several societies she feels o An incredible graphical memoir with a captivating comics style。 Satrapi starts the story somewhat abstract and grandiose, which makes perfect sense for an adult remembering what it was like to be a child - especially growing up during such utter societal upheaval。 She slowly becomes more practical in her writing style as she reflects on herself growing up, until she eventually has to accept her relationship with the her family, her culture, her home country, and the several societies she feels only partly connected to。 The ending felt a little bit rushed, but of course you can't write memoir past your current place in life。 I related to Satrapi's character so much that it's disturbing。 Even during extremely bloody revolution, people are people and there's an eery sense of normalcy。。。 I don't ever want to live in a land full of bloody revolution or war。 Just after reading this, Israel unleashed a fresh wave of ethnic cleansing and deadly air strikes on captive Palestine。 None of these things should ever have happened, and I thank Satrapi for capturing it for all of us。 Please。。。 let us learn。 。。。more

Moving, devastating, sad, disturbing, frightening, inspiring。 It’s the history that I always hoped couldn’t possibly be real。

Persepolis part I & II by Marjane Satrapi。I have read hundreds of graphic novels, but nothing like Persepolis ♥️Persepolis is Marjane Satrapi’s memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution。 It was a whip-smart, heartbreaking and intense read— I had many thoughts and feelings while reading, so much so that I had to put it down multiple times to take a breather & feel the beauty of the emotional reality of a war struck teen。There are scores of themes worth exploring & learning here: Persepolis part I & II by Marjane Satrapi。I have read hundreds of graphic novels, but nothing like Persepolis ♥️Persepolis is Marjane Satrapi’s memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution。 It was a whip-smart, heartbreaking and intense read— I had many thoughts and feelings while reading, so much so that I had to put it down multiple times to take a breather & feel the beauty of the emotional reality of a war struck teen。There are scores of themes worth exploring & learning here: The Veil, religion, feminism, fundamentals, resilience, life and death, inter-generational relationships, love, loss & revolution。One can't help but fall in love with the story Satrapi lived, and her precious, astute, and courageous interaction with the world around her that consisted of all the figures needed to base upon ones life: God, family, friends, crush, mates & of course the introspection with self。 The book provides a wide window view to the lives of Iranian people during and after the Iranian revolution with a clever mix of humour and tragedy spread throughout the book。My favourite part about the story was Satrapi’s own voice, I could feel her in it。 All the loss she suffered, all the deaths she witnessed, and the labor she bore in her mind, everything was so incredibly stirring。 I felt myself become a little more quiet (on the inside) and appreciate every single right my life & country has given me with。 In parallel, a story like Satrapi’s gave me a whole new kind of perspective towards not just life, but what you make of it。Persepolis through Satrapi’s voice is a rebel with a cause。 。。。more

A true, modern classic。There are way too few books focused on the life of middle eastern women that reaches as large or wide an audience, but at least we have Persepolis。If you haven’t gotten to this - despite it being included on every "must-read graphic novels"-list - it’s time to do so。 A true, modern classic。There are way too few books focused on the life of middle eastern women that reaches as large or wide an audience, but at least we have Persepolis。If you haven’t gotten to this - despite it being included on every "must-read graphic novels"-list - it’s time to do so。 。。。more

Fantastic, effective and eye opening。 Satrapi does a wonderful job including not only the aspects of war and her experiences (along with relevant facts about Iranian society for context), but also does not shy away from including positive and negative aspects of her own character and actions during these times。 The real genius though is the inclusion of humor that provides some witty and tactful levity to the brutal honesty within her narrative。
